Black eyed peas pilaf or lobia pulao is a healthy and tasty one pot rice and bean dish that makes a wonderful and filling meal.
Black Eyed Beans Pulao
The black eyed peas or lobia in Hindi is one of the protein rich legumes. So this black eyed peas pulao is a nutritious and delicious rice dish that I prefer to make on busy days.
Whenever I cook lobia curry, I make sure to save some boiled black eyed peas to make this pulao, the very next day. Sometimes, I even use the leftover curry itself in the pulao to bring out extra flavors.
Ingredients Needed to make Pulao
- Basmati rice– Pulao and biryani tastes better with basmati rice.
- Black eyed peas /lobia– Dry or cooked black eyed peas.
- Onions– Thinly sliced red onions will do wonders in the recipe.
- Tomato– To add the tanginess.
- Green chillies-For that extra kick.
- Ginger
- Garlic cloves
- Cumin seeds
- Spices -Only a few minimal spices like red chilly powder ,coriander powder, turmeric powder and garam masala is used.
- Oil-I prefer to use sunflower or olive oil to make pulaos but you can use any of your favourite oil.
Black Eyed Peas is a power house of protein, good for heart health and helps combat anaemia as well.
How to make the Pulao?
Step 1. Make sure to soak the black eyed peas overnight or for at least 4-6 hours in enough water. In a blender or grinder make a paste of the ingredients listed under ‘for paste’ and keep aside (See recipe card below).
Step 2.Cook the soaked black eyed peas in pressure cooker/instant pot or saucepan until beans are soft.
Step 3. In a pressure cooker or pan, saute onions with cumin seeds and whole spices. Add the ground paste and tomatoes along with spices and salt. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
Step 4. Add the rice and cooked black eyed peas and water. Cook covered, until rice are soft and all of the water is absorbed. If using pressure cooker, cook for 1 whistle.
Step 5. Let the pressure release, open the lid and mix the rice gently with fork. Serve and enjoy.
Serving Suggestions and Variations
Serve the black eyed peas pulao with cucumber raita, pickle, mint chutney or salad. For variations you can also use any other beans of your choice like kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans etc.
You can also add chopped vegetables like carrots, green beans, cauliflower etc.
Pro Tip
To bring out the best flavors in the pulao serve it with a dollop of ghee / clarified butter and it will bring the taste to next levels.
