Toor Dal with Rice

A very delicious Punjabi dal style Toor dal recipe which is cooked with tomatoes, onions, and spices. Serve it with boiled or jeera rice, it’s a match made in heaven.

What is Toor Dal?

Toor dal is split pigeon pea/arhar dal lentil that is widely used in Indian cooking mostly to make Sambhar. However, this recipe is the Punjabi way of cooking with Toor dal and tastes absolutely amazing with rice.

When it comes to comfort food, dal chawal aka dal and rice combination is the one and only comfort food for us.

Basic Ingredients for Toor dal:

The basic ingredients to make toor dal are listed below.

  • Firstly, Toor dal-Pick and clean the dal before cooking to remove any adulteration.
  • Onion-White or red any kind of onion is fine for the recipe.
  • Tomato-I prefers plum tomatoes in my dal recipes.
  • Asafetida- Do not miss asafetida as it gives a very nice flavor.
  • Ghee-I uses ghee to make dals but if looking to make it vegan them.

How to make Toor Dal?

Making toor dal is very easy all you need to do is pressure cook the dal first. Then make the tadka seasoning by cooking onions, tomatoes, and spices. Finally pour the dal over tadka or tadka on top of dal, either way, you are done.
