Poha or pohay is a very comforting and delicious breakfast dish, takes very less time to prepare and makes a healthy and filling breakfast to feel you satiated for long hours.
Breakfast Poha / Aval/ Chivda
Poha is the classic breakfast dish prepared throughout the various states of India. The pohay or poha are made sing flattened rice, onions, peanuts, curry leaves and mustard seeds.
As they are a good source of carbohydrates and takes very less time to prepare. For the same reason POHA are often made for a quick and easy breakfast.
I, for sure make it at least two three times a week. Whenever Ia am not in mood to cook something elaborate for breakfast or for tho lazy days, it definitely comes to rescue. From starting to end it only takes 15 to 20 minutes to make a delicious poha for breakfast. The best part i they make an amazing lunchbox too.
Every house has its own recipe, some people make Kanda Poha (Kanda means onions), while others would add potatoes and make batata poha. There’s one special version from Uttar Pradesh called Chuda Matar that is made with green peas and flattened rice. Make it any of the ways, poha definitely is going to taste amazing with a cup of tea.
What Ingredients you’ll need?
- First, Flattened rice/Poha/Aval: I like to make the poha with medium-thick flattened rice. You could use your preferred ones.
- Tomato:Adding tomatoes are totally optional but I love the tang and moisture they give to the poha.
- Onions:For adding texture and flavors.
- Spices: Minimal basic spices like turmeric, red chili, coriander, and garam masala are needed.
- Mustard seeds and Curry leaves: The splattered mustard seeds along with curry leaves brings out the most amazing flavors.
- Coriander leaves: Adds a fresh and refreshing flavor in the poha.
- Lemon juice: For that slightly sour flavors.
- Peanuts-They add a nice crunch and protein into the breakfast poha.
How to make Poha
Fisrt step is to wah and drain the flattened rice or poha under running water. Keep it aside. Now make the tempering, heat oil in a wok or pan and add aseftida, mustard and curry leaves. Let the seeds cravlkle for a bit and add dried red cehole chillies.
Now add the onions and saute until the onions turn slightly golden. While the onions are sauteeing also add the peanuts. Chop the tomatoes and green chilli. Add the spices and salt followed by tomatoes and green chilli. Cook it on medium heat until tomatoes are soft.
Finally add the drained poha, mix well to combine. Drizzle lemon juice and add coriander leaves, mix mix mix.
Serve the poha warm with a cup of tea or coffee.
Serving and Variations
Serve the poha with a cup of tea, ketchup, and or coffee. You could also pair it with Jalebi like the popular Indori breakfast poha jalebi. For variations, you could add chopped vegetables, cashew nuts, or even raisins in your poha.
