Besan Chilla Recipe

Besan Chilla or cheela is a healthy and nutritious breakfast dish of India, very easy to make and keeps you satisfied for long.

What is Besan Chilla?

Besan Chilla or Cheela is savoury gram flour crepe. Basically, it is an omelette for vegans and vegetarians. I love making besan chilla for our breakfast, as it is very easy to make and can be ready in under 15 minutes.

You can serve besan chilla as it is or as a wrap with your favorite stuffing. Sometimes I add paneer bhurji, mushroom filling or simple tomato onions topping. You can also use any leftover dry sabzi like aloo gobi, aloo baingan or Patta gobi matar.

Basic Ingredients for Besan Chilla:

  • First, Besan-Besan/ gram flour or chickpea flour.
  • Spices-Garam masala, carom seeds, red chilli, and salt.
  • Toppings-Tomato, Onion, Green chilli and Coriander leaves
  • Chaat Masala-Adds a nice flavor to the chilla.

How to make Besan Chilla?

Besan Chilla is one of the easiest breakfast ever. First of all, make the gram flour batter by mixing gram flour, spices, and water. Add water slowly and make a smooth and lump-free batter.

Now all you need to do is heat up a tawa/skillet and make chilla/crepes (Printable Recipe card is shown below in detail). Top with chopped tomatoes, onions or fill with your favorite stuffing. Sprinkle some chaat masala (optional) and flip to cook from other side.

Once the chilla is cooked from both sides, transfer it into a plate and serve right away.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve the chilla with mint chutney and tea.

Notes

  1. Make sure not to add too much or too less water in the batter. It should be smooth without lumps and free-flowing. I have used the same measuring cup for both flour and water.
  2. For best results make the batter when you are ready to eat.
  3. Adjust the spices as per your taste .
  4. The consistency of batter depends on the quality of the flour.
