Aloo Pakoda | Potato Bajji

Aloo Pakoda or Aloo Bhajji is a crispy deep-fried potato bhajji that is a perfect tea time snack to enjoy in evenings with chai and chutney.

What is aloo bhajji?

Aloo bhajji is a very popular tea time snack in India. Every household have their own recipe and preferences to make it. We love to enjoy these crispy deep fried aloo bhajji on a rainy day with some masala chai and mint chutney. Nothing beats the taste of this simple yet delicious bhajjis.

Basic Ingredients for Aloo Pakoda:

The basic ingredients needed to make allo pakoda are listed below.

  • Firstly, Potato-Use medium-large size potato so you can cut even slices.
  • Besan/gram flour-Any variety of gram flour is fine to use in the recipe.
  • Spices-It only needs minimal spices.
  • Oil-For deep frying the bhajjis.

How to make aloo pakoda?

The process of making aloo pakoda is very simple. First wash, peel and cut the potato slices and later on make the batter and keep it aside.

Now when you are ready to deep fry, coat each slice in the batter and transfer in the preheated oil wok one by one.

Stir in between and deep fry until golden from all sides. Jut make sure to make the batter right consistency, not too thick or thin. Now remove the pakoda from oil on paper towel and serve right away.

Serving Suggestions and Variations:

Serve the deep-fried pakoda with mint chutney, ketchup, and tea. For variation, you may cut the potato in small cubes, add onions and or favorite vegetables and make the mixed veg bhaji or aloo pyaz ke pakode.

Equipment

Ingredients
  

  • 4-6 medium-sized Potatoes round slices
  • 3/4 cup gram flour/besan
  • 1 teaspoon red chilly powder
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala
  • 1 teaspoon mango powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon carom seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 green chilli chopped
  • 2 tablespoon coriander leaves chopped
  • salt to taste
  • water as required
  • oil for frying

Instructions
 

  • Sift gram flour in a mixing bowl. Add all the ingredients except water, potatoes, and oil.
  • Add water slowly to make a thick batter. Mix well to remove any lumps.
  • Heat oil in a wok, dip one potato slice at a time in gram flour batter and place it in hot oil. Add 10-12 slices in every batch in the oil.
  • Fry from both sides till golden and drain on paper towels.
  • Press the pakoras in between palms in a foil paper and fry again for crispier pakodas.
  • Repeat the same procedure for next batches.
  • Remove from oil on paper towel and serve warm.

Notes

Adjust spices as per your taste.
Double frying the bhajji makes them more crispy, if you want you can skip that part.
