Irish Soda Bread

Irish Soda Bread-A super easy and crusty and rustic Irish soda bread is just perfect to grab on for breakfast with some butter or jam.

Irish soda bread the easiest and simplest bread ever which needs only under five ingredients, how cool is that, right? Its been almost four years in Ireland and I have never ever tried the simplest bread recipe of the country.

The main reason was we were getting enough in the stores and I never felt the need of baking the classic soda bread. Freshly baked bread from the local food market is the best and doesn’t have preservatives as they bake it fresh every day to use on the same day.

I guess I would have never baked this bread unless I found this amazing recipe in Rachel Allen’s Irish Recipes cookbook which got me hooked on the pictures and recipe.

I immediately baked the recipe same day and it was ready to eat for breakfast in just an hour. The best part is you would be eating actual bread and there is no waiting or resting time for proofing. amazing isn’t it?

The rustic loaf makes a really nice and filling breakfast either served toasted with butter or smeared with jam. We just had the bread with butter and some fruit punch and breakfast were all sorted.

I know it sounds weird to serve bread with the punch but my girls loved it and so did we. Later on, we had some hot masala chai followed by a two hours nap on the weekend.

Most amazing part of the soda bread is anyone can bake it, I know how difficult the other bread seems as I have had many failed attempts in baking loaves of bread. So when it comes to bread baking I always try to skip unless needed in an emergency.

There are not many breads on the blog and I still need a lot of courage and time to start baking them, So until now, I can only vow for Easy Sandwich Bread and Whole Wheat Banana Bread.

Ingredients

  • 450 gm plain flour+more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon bking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 400 ml buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 220° and dust a baking sheet with some flour.
  • In a mixing bowl sift flour, salt, sugar and baking soda. Make a well in the center of the flour and add about all of the buttermilk leaving about 50 ml.
  • Mix the flour and buttermilk together with your hands until it brings together. No need of kneading the dough just make sure it is soft but not sticky.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured work surface and bring together into a round about 4-5 cm thick. Make the deep cross in the dough.
  • Place the dough on to the prepared baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes.
  • Turn down the oven temperature to 200° C and bake for 30 to 35 minutes more.
  • To check the doneness tap the bottom of the loaf and it should sound hollow and color will be golden on the crust.
  • Cool completely before slicing. Serve and enjoy.

Notes

Make sure to not add all the buttermilk at once. Just look and add the desired amount to make a smooth dough.
Do not knead the dough or else it will become heavy.

Irish soda bread is one of the most basic breads to bake — no yeast and since it’s rustic, we can get as rustic as we want 🙂 your bread looks beautiful and I can definitely see myself having it for breakfast with some jelly.

The about to melt butter on the slice of soda bread is just too tempting. I’ve yet to bake a soda bread. Had it down as a breakfast dish but opted to make something else. Sometimes the easy recipes don’t make it to the blog.
