What is Chai?

Chai is the quintessential hot beverage of the Indian subcontinent, made up of brewing of tea leaves, spices, and herbs. Every household has its own recipe for making chai. Some prefer it without masala or spices while others do love adding them.

The recipe I am posting is the way we make chai at home. I prefer adding ginger, green cardamom, and fennel seeds in my tea. However, traditional masala chai also contains a combination of clove, cardamom, nutmeg, aniseed, fennel seeds, ground ginger, cloves, and peppercorn. The spice mix for masala chai is also readily available in shops and supermarkets.

Indians are huge chai fans and you may find local chai walla’s (tea vendor) on roadside and people would take their morning tea on the way to the offices. Tea vendors occasionally bring loads of tea to business companies as well and serve it with local biscuits, savory puffs or sometimes with pakodas.

Basic Ingredients for Chai:

  • Firstly, Loose black Tea- We prefer a good quality of loose black tea, mostly Assam tea to make our tea. But you can also use normal black tea bags.
  • Milk- Usually whole milk is used to make the chai, but I guess it is your choice to use whatever kind of milk you prefer.
  • Sweetener-Sugar is the first choice of sweetener in chai.

How to make chai?

Making chai takes a bit more time than the kettle boiled water brew tea. You’ll need a bit more patience to make it. Although it is very easy and once you get the hang of it, you will never be wrong.

Start making your tea by boiling water in a saucepan followed by adding tea, spices, milk, and sugar. Let the milk steamed. Now pour the tea in cops to serve. If you are using loose tea instead of tea bags then filter before serving.

Serving and Variations.

Serve the tea right away when you made it. You may add different combination of spices and herbs that I mentioned above or none at all.
