Kahwah tea

A soothing and relaxing Kashmiri style green tea beverage. Kahwah tea is a very popular and traditional hot beverage of India.

What is Kahwah/Kahwa Tea?

Kahwa or kahwa is a traditional hot green tea beverage consumed in Kashmir region of India. It is made with boiling of the tea leaves in water along with whole spices like cinnamon, cardamom, clove etc. Kahwah is often served after food, mainly to digest.

My family loves kahwah and we normally drink it almost everyday in winters. The herbs and green tea infused kahwah makes a soothing and flavorful hot beverage. This is a perfect beverage to enjoy on cold winter days while snuggling in a blanket.

Normally ginger is not added in it but we sometimes add ginger which gives a nice flavor and taste to the kahwah. Traditionally, it is served with dried fruits and nuts and sometimes also served with added milk.

Ingredients Needed to make Kahwah tea

  • Green Tea Leaves: Dried whole green tea leaves are used to make it.
  • Whole Spices:Cinnamon, Cloves, Cardamom, Black Pepper, Mace etc.
  • Sweetener:Honey or sugar
  • Saffron: I have not used it but it is often added in kahwah.

How to make Kahwah?

Boil water in a saucepan with green tea leaves on very low flame. Lightly pound the spices and ginger in pestle and mortar.

Add all of the whole spices, ginger and saffron(if using) and let it boil for some time. When colour of water changes to reddish brown ,turn off the heat and add honey or sugar.

Pour in serving glasses or cup. Enjoy! Alternatively you can brew it in a tea kettle as well.

Serving Suggestions and Variations

Serve the kahwah with dried fruits and nuts like almonds, pistachios and walnuts etc. Add milk for variations in the taste and flavors.
