Moth Di Dal

Moth dal is a simple yet scrumptious dal preparation , popular in North Indian cuisine. It’s similar to Green gram in texture but is of brown color and gives a completely different taste . My dinner menu is always packed with one type of dal along with side dish , rice and Chapatis.


So obviously my pantry is full of all kinds of dal . I mean I have each dal with all varieties like , whole , split , split and washed etc. It takes about two months to came up on a same dal . Today is moth dal turn and I have to prepare it. It’s simple to cook and healthy also .

Ingredients:
200 gm moth dal
2 teaspoon garlic ,chopped
2 teaspoon ginger,grated
1 onion , finely chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped
2 green chilly ,chopped
3 tablespoon clarified butter
1 teaspoon cumin seeds

Spices:
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon red chilly powder
salt to taste
1 teaspoon garam masala
1/4 cup coriander leaves ,chopped

Method:
Wash and cook moth in 3 glass water with 1/2 tsp of salt for 4 whistles in a pressure cooker. Take 1/2 bowl of boiled dal , smash it and keep aside.
Heat ghee in a pan,add cumin seeds and with the sound of crackling add grated ginger and garlic.Sauté and wait till it becomes golden.
Add chopped onions.Saute for 5 minutes till they are light golden and add all spices and salt , give a stir.
Now add chopped chillies and tomatoes.Stir and cook till oil comes out.Now add the dal which we kept aside. Stir continuously till ghee comes out from edges.
Add this masala to boiled dal .Let the dal cooked for 10 minutes to mix the masala and adding flavors in it.
Remove from heat and add garam masala and chopped coriander leaves.

Serve hot with rice and chapati.

Serve-4. Cooking time-45 minutes

Note: You may cook dal in microwave also
If any dal left , use it in making parathas the next day.

  1. Basically I think dhal is so welcomed in Indian family and a must for most of the food we cook. I too use plenty of it. This moth dhal is inviting me very much because I need my dhal dosage very much. Of course the rice must be there too.
