Marathi Masala Khichdi

Marathi masala khichdi is a simple yet flavorful rice and lentil khichdi that would make a nice and comforting meal for any time.

What is Khichdi?

Khichdi is the most comforting food in India. In Fact, if I would say it is the soul food, it won’t be wrong. It contains both protein and carbohydrates in the form of lentil and rice. Every house has its own recipe of khichdi and different varieties.

Marathi Masala Khichdi

This marathi khichdi is made with rice and yellow dal lentil with minimal spices and flavorings. The addition of goda masala and coconut makes it more interesting and delicious.

I have added few vegetables along with tomatoes and onions to make it a hearty and filling meal. We paired the khichdi with some dry potatoes and it was a wonderful combination.

Basic Ingredients:

  • First, Rice-Any variety of rice is fine. I prefer making khichdi with sella rice or broken basmati rice.
  • Yellow moong dal- I used split yellow moong dal but you can make the khichdi with Toor dal or any other lentil.
  • Onion-Small red onion.
  • Goda masala- Maharashtrian spice mix.

How to make Marathi Khichdi?

The khichdi is one of the easiest meals ever, all you need to do is saute the spices and onions in ghee or oil. Cook the tomatoes with vegetables to make them a bit soft. Finally, add the rice and lentil along with water and pressure cook for 2-3 whistles.

Let the pressure of the cooker release naturally. Open the lid and mix well. Serve the khichdi right away.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve the khichdi with raita, chutney, pickle, and or any of your favorite side dishes. The popular servings of khichdi are Dahi papad chutney and achaar (yogurt, popadums, chutney, and pickle).
