Jhal Muri is a famous street food of Kolkata , similar to Bhel Puri of Mumbai . The main difference in the two is Jhal Muri doesn’t require the two chutneys and additionally infused with pickled or mustard oil. When I was preparing it my daughter was pretty excited and asked Is this bhel puri ? to which I replied no it’s Jhal Muri . She got a bit confused but later on learned this name.decided to put this in Street food category with alphabet ‘J’
We live on the second floor of building , most of the time I avoid going downstairs . to save time and hassleness I have placed a bucket with long rope and hang it down when I need something from the Sabzi Wala or our local grocery bhaiya who rescues me with bread and milk when I demands. Me and my daughter shouts like crazy person when we ask for any thing from vendors and to add this craziness my neighbor friend also did the same thing . We used to pass on things by this method. I passed my Jhal Muri in the paper cones to my neighbor friend via this bucket , asking the street children to pass on. When she picked it up she asked curiously Is it Bhel puri ? And to answer that my daughter replied no it’s Jhal Muri. I couldn’t stop myself laughing on her immediate reaction.Coming to our recipe , it’s a great snack enjoy it with family and friends anytime. It is indeed a lip smacking snack. When we were travelling from Mumbai to Kolkata some almost 20 years ago we were told to taste this as soon as we entered Bihar. We tasted and then everytime a Jhal Murivala entered the compartment all of us had it till we reached our destination.
The taste still lingers.
wow a tempting snack!
I've made this before. It is in a cookbook called the Turmeric Trail. The author just calls it Muri – I like the backstory especially the image of you and your neighbor with the rope.

Such a tempting street food…Perfect for the evening snack. Your story reminded us of our days in Kanpur when my mother used to do the same thing when getting milk from the dhoodhwala. She used a bucket and rope to get the fresh milk from the vendor 🙂
