What is Bhel Puri?

Bhel puri is a popular street food snack in Mumbai. A sweet, spicy, and tangy treat, completely Indian in origin with liveliness attached with Chowpatty beach of Mumbai. This street food/chaat can be enjoyed with your loving partners/family while having wonderful moments on the beach. It can surely lift your mood with all those amazing flavors.

Bhel puri is mainly prepared from puffed rice and fried gram flour snacks along with onions, tomatoes, potatoes, tamarind chutney, and other spices. The popularity of bhel puri has made it spread across the country where it is served modified to suit the availability of local ingredients. Another variation of bhelpuri in Bengali cuisine is Jhal muri and there is another popular Mangalorean snack called churmuri.

Ingredients Needed for Bhelpuri

  • Puffed rice: Puffed rice/murmura is the base of bhel puri. It is easily available at Asian grocery stores.
  • Plain Sev: Gram flour savory noodles/plain sev is used in the bhel. I have used homemade plain sev. However, you can also add the Bombay mixture available in the market.
  • Peanuts: Fried/roasted red peanuts. Homemade, or store-bought.
  • Vegetables: Tomatoes, Onions, and potatoes along with green chillies.
  • Coriander leaves: Fresh coriander leaves to add nice refreshing flavors.
  • Spices: Dry mango powder, cumin powder, chaat masala, salt, and rock salt.
  • Lemon juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Chutney: Tamarind and mint chutney.

How to make Bhelpuri?

Step 1. Roast puffed rice-Bhelpuri is one of the easiest snack ever. All you need to do is dry roast the puffed rice with a pinch of salt and turmeric. Set them aside to cool.

Step 2. Prepare your vegetables– Boil the potatoes and cut in cubes. Dice the tomatoes and onions. Chop green chilies and coriander leaves.

Step 3. Assembling– In a big mixing bowl add the roasted puffed rice, plain sev, red peanuts, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, green chilies, and coriander leaves. Give them a nice mix. Now add all of the spices and salt. Stir and add tamarind chutney, mint chutney, and lemon juice. Serve immediately.

Serving Suggestions and Vartiations

Serve the bhelpuri with a glass of juice, blueberry lemonade, mango mojito, or kiwi smoothie. You can also pair it with pav bhaji.

For a variation, you can also add chopped fruits like apple and pear and pomegranate seeds in it. To make the bhelpuri extra flavorful you can also add savory snacks like mathri, namak pare, besan gathiya, fafda, chana dal namkeen.

Pro Tips

  • Prepare the dry mixture of puffed rice, sev, peanuts and spices and keep it in air tight container to use anytime.
