A very simple yet super delicious Patta gobhi matar also known as cabbage and peas stir fry is a wonderful dish to pair with flatbread.
What is Patta Gobhi?
Patta Gobhi or also known as Band Gobhi in Hindi is nothing but our own cabbage. Patta Gobhi Matar is a simple and easy cabbage and green peas stir fry that pairs absolutely amazing with chapati and yogurt.
This used to be our family’s favorite dish to make in winter when the cabbage is seasonal and fresh.
Basic Ingredients for Patta Gobhi Matar:
The basic ingredients to make patta gobhi and matar are listed below.
- Firstly, Cabbage- Always pick fresh cabbage to make this stir fry. Wash it thoroughly and slices thinly.
- Ginger- The ginger balances the pungent flavors of cabbage and makes it more delicious.
- Cumin seeds- These are the most needed in any dry stir fry dish.
- Tomato and Green Chilly- Tomato adds nice tanginess and green chili to the spice index in the dish.
- Spices- The common four-spice we use in our Punjabi cooking i.e turmeric, coriander, garam masala, red chili powder are a must.
- Asafetida- Adds a very nice flavor to Patta gobhi matar sabzi.
- Salt-Mandatory ingredient!
- Oil- Any cooking oil is fine.
How to make patta gobhi matar?
The process is really simple to make the dish, you just need to splutter cumin and ginger in oil and then cook the cabbage and peas on low until soft.
After that just add all the spices, tomatoes green chilies and cook for few more minutes. Be generous to add coriander leaves when the stir fry is done.

Serve this lip-smacking delicious curry with ghee smeared chapatis and or rice.
Cabbage and Peas Stir Fry

Ingredients
- 1 medium cabbage head thinly sliced
- 1 cup peas
- 2 green chilies chopped
- 1 teaspoon ginger grated
- 2 tomatoes chopped
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 pinch asafetida
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- salt to taste
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- 2 tablespoon coriander leaves chopped
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan, add asafetida and cumin seeds, let the seeds splutter. Add ginger, green chilly and saute for a minute.
- Stir and add cabbage and peas. Mix well and let it cook for a few minutes, covered with a lid on low heat.
- Add all spices and salt, stir and add tomatoes in the center, cover with cabbage and cook for 5 minutes till water of tomatoes evaporates and oil comes out.
- Garnish with garam masala and chopped coriander. Serve with rice or roti.
Notes
- You may use any oil of your choice instead of olive oil.
- Add green chillies as per your taste.
- This sabzi can be made in pressure cooker as well, cook for one whistle and let the pressure releases.
