Khatta Meetha Kaddu is sour and sweet, mashed pumpkin curry cooked in minimal spices and tastes just amazing.
What is Kaddu ?
Kaddu is a Hindi name of the humble vegetable pumpkin. The orange color is due to beta-carotene and is very rich in vitamin A , C and E . It is very good for skin nourishment and protect it against wrinkles.
Pumpkin is good for the health of eyes because of excessive amount of Vitamin A .Whoa , so much health benefits in one single vegetable , isn’t it incredible?
Well there are a variety of ways to include pumpkin in our diet e.g. Pumpkin seeds chocolate bark or you can make Pumpkin Vindaloo .
Khatta Meetha Kaddu
Khatta meetha kaddu is sour and sweet pumpkin dry curry that I occasionally make. This curry tastes absolutely delicious with poori and or chapati. The sweetness of pumpkin slightly balanced with sourness of dried mango powder is an ultimate combination.
The best part is, this curry doesn’t need too many ingredients. Only few spices and viola it will be ready in just a few minutes.
Ingredients needed to make Kaddu
- Pumpkin: Fresh cubes of pumpkin with or without skin. You can also use butternut squash to make this curry.
- Spices: Turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander, garam masala, and dried mango powder is used.
- Coriander leaves: Adds a nice refreshing flavors in the dish.
How to make Khatta Meetha Kaduu?
This is one quick and easy dry mashed curry to make. It literally takes 20 minutes to cook with easily available pantry ingredients.
First of all, peel and chop the pumpkin into small cubes. You can use it with skin as well. Heat oil in a pan and add asafetida, cumin, and ginger and saute for a minute. Now add the pumpkin cubes, stir and cook covered until pumpkin is soft. Stir in between occasionally.
Once the pumpkin pieces have started becoming soft, add salt and spices and mix well. Cook it again for few minutes while covered with lid.
Open the lid and mash the pumpkin with the back of the spoon and adjust the seasoning. Finally add coriander leaves and turn off the heat.
Serving suggestions and Variations
Serve the pumpkin curry with chapati, paratha or plain boiled rice. You can also pair it with poori. For a variation you can add tomatoes and onions in the curry. Dried mango powder can also be replaced with tamarind pulp.
