Kamarkattu/ Kamarkat /Coconut Jaggery Balls/Coconut Candy

Kamarkattu is a type of coconut candy and is famous in Southern States of India. It was a kids favorite during 80’s and 90’s. I have never heard and seen them. While searching a few blogs I found this recipe and bookmarked it. After a little “ifs and buts” I give it a try and it was a success. At first my daughter thought that I have made Gulab Jamun but as soon as she take it in her hands , she had realized that it was something else. Nevertheless she liked it and lick them all till finished. So let’s start the recipe .yum

Ingredients:
1/4 cup coconut ,grated
3/4 cup jaggery ,ground
2 tablespoon Water
1 teaspoonCardamom powder
1 teaspoon clarified butter/Ghee
1 tablespoon Rice flour (optional)

Method:
Heat ghee in a wok and roast the grated coconut till slightly brown in color.Keep aside.
Heat jaggery in the same wok along with water. Melt the jaggery and strain to remove the impurities.
Again heat the jaggery syrup on low heat till it becomes frothy . After few minutes , pour a drop of syrup in a plateful of water. You should be able to roll that drop. If it doesn’t reach that consistency cook a few minutes more.
Now add the roasted coconut (keep low flame ) and mix well. At one stage , the mixture become thick and leaves the sides.
When the mixture is still warm , grease hands with oil and make tight balls.Roll in rice flour & set aside. Follow the same procedure for all the balls. Coat in rice flour if you have some.
Enjoy with tea.

Serve-8-10 balls. Cooking time -30 minutes
Note: According to original recipe Rolling in rice flour prevents sticking of kamarkattu . Since I don’t have rice flour , I skipped that part.
Here I have used dried coconut instead of fresh as stated in the original recipe.

  3. Something new for me but its really inviting. I have a high liking for coconut and sweets made with it. Not sure if jaggery can be found over here but I think I can try with our gula melaka, palm sugar which is popularly used for desserts.
