Sabudana Thalipeeth

Sabudana Thalipeeth is a tasty and healthy Maharashtrian savory pancake made with sabudana/ tapioca pearls and potatoes. 

What is Sabudana Thalipeeth?

Thalipeeth is Maharashtrian style flatbread made with variety of flours, vegetables, and potatoes. Sabudana thalippeth is one such flatbread made using potato, sabudana and minimal spices. It is apt to consume during Navratri or any other fasting day.

Sabudana thalipeeth is a very delicious and filling dish pairs very well with chutney and or raita.

Basic Ingredients for Sabudana thalipeeth:

The basic ingredients to make the thalipeeth are listed below.

  • Firstly, Sabudana/tapioca seeds-Medium sized sabudana will be good for the recipe.
  • Potatoes-boiled and mashed potatoes are needed in the dish.
  • Roasted peanuts-Dry roast the peanuts to make them slightly crispy.
  • Green chilies-Use finger chilies finely chopped as per your taste.
  • Ginger-Adash of grated ginger to make it more flavorful.
  • Lemon juice-To add some tanginess in the flatbread.
  • Coriander leaves-Freshly chopped coriander leaves for some color and flavor.
  • Cumin seeds-A teaspoon of cumin seeds for some added crunch and taste.
  • Red chili powder-Use as per your taste or you may skip it.
  • Coriander powder-Homemade coriander powder tastes better but storebought will be fine too.
  • Rock salt -Replace with regular salt if not making for fasting.
  • Oil -For cooking the flatbread.

How to make Sabudana Thalipeeth?

It is super easy to make, you’ll need to gather all the ingredients and combine them in a mixing bowl except the oil. Once done make some golf ball-sized balls from the mixture.

Now grease your plans and flatten the balls of mixture in your hands, transfer on the preheated skillet and cook form both sides using a little oil.

Serving suggestions:

Serve the thalippeth as it is or with some chutney, raita or any side dish.

A very tasty and healthy potato and sabudana flatbread which is vey popular in Maharatrian cuisine. This is a falaari flatbread and can be consumed while fasting.

Equipment

  • Skillet

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup sago pearls/sabudana/tapioca seeds
  • 4 medium-sized potatoes boiled and mashed
  • 1/4 cup roasted peanuts coarsely ground
  • 2 green chilies chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger grated
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon coriander leaves chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • rock salt to taste
  • oil for shallow frying

Instructions
 

  • Wash and soak sago pearls in enough water for 2-3 hours or overnight.
  • Once soaked remove the excess water if there is any and pat dry the sago pearls on the kitchen towel.
  • In a mixing bowl add potatoes, sago pearls and all the remaining ingredients except oil. Mix well until everything is combined.
  • Divide the dough into 6 balls . Apply some oil on the palms and flatten the ball in between your palm or on a ziplock bag or use a rolling board and baking paper to roll the thalipeeth.
  • Heat oil in a pan or skillet. Transfer the thalipeeth on the skillet and cook on low to medium heat from one side until brown.
  • Flip the thalipeeth using a spatula and cook on the other side.
  • Gently transfer the thalipeeth in plates.
  • Serve warm with chutney.

Notes

  1. Adjust the spices as per your taste and preferences.
  2. Make sure to apply oil in your palms before making the thalipeeth.

  1. Delicious thalipeeth. We love them too and make it sometimes though we don't follow any fasting diet as such since we don't eat anything other than fruits if needed, during fasting.
