Mangalore Buns-A soft, fermented banana sweet buns from Mangalore region of Karnataka with some chutney or saagu is perfect for a nice and delicious weekend breakfast.
When I first saw the Mangalore buns at friend’s house I thought they were mini Bhature but when I tasted the first bite it was slightly sweet with a hint of banana.I was totally surprised and then got to know about this unique and interesting dish from Mangalore.
I served the buns with tomato onion chutney but I think it is best served with coconut chutney or a simple vegetable curry or saggu.
I know if you haven’t been familiar with the dish and trying for the first time you would think how a sweet bun would taste good with a spicy chutney or curry but believe me it does taste amazing. The mild sweetness from banana, when paired with spicy chutney, tastes just so delicious.
If you love banana than you will definitely like the popular street food of Mangalore which definitely will make you feel satisfied until before the next meal.

Manglore Buns
Ingredients
- 2 cups plain flour
- 2 bananas
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- oil for frying
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl sift flour, salt, soda, and sugar. Add cumin powder and set it aside.
- In another mixing bowl mash the bananas with fork or back of the spoon. Add yogurt to the banana mash and mix well.
- Add the sifted flour mixture into the banana mixture and combine well. Knead a smooth dough, add a little water if required.
- Apply some oil on the dough, cover and let it rest for about 6-8 hours or overnight.
- Heat oil in a pan or wok on low to medium heat.
- Divide the dough into 10-12 equal lemon size balls. Roll each ball into a small round like poori but slightly thicker than poori.
- Fry in oil until puffy and golden from both sides. Drain on paper towel and serve with coconut or tomato chutney.

I love mangalore buns very much, and that plate is totally fabulous, feel like having them with that fingerlicking side dish.
I have made them once for indian cooking challenge and we love it so much . It’s been long time since i made and it’s really tempting now . Really love the subtle sweetness and flavor of banana in this bun !!! Well made, looks delicious,Sapana

With sagu this is definitely a hit. I made it for ICC challenge and after that never tried. Your recipe reminded me and I need to try them again.

Every time I see Mangalore buns on a fellow bloggers site, I think I should make these and then forget. The Mangalore buns look so tempting. I was wondering whether they would taste too sweet but your suggestion of serving with a chutney or saag is good.
I had planned to make these for my M, but then changed to Masala pori. Buns looks soft and fluffy and must have tasted delicious with that spicy chutney
