Homemade Apple Cider

Homemade Slow-Cooker Spiced Apple Cider

Thereโ€™s nothing quite like the smell of warm apples, citrus, and spices drifting through the house on a cool day. This slow-cooker spiced apple cider is one of those simple, rustic recipes that makes your kitchen feel like a cozy autumn cabin no matter the season. With a blend of sweet and tart apples, bright orange slices, and fragrant cloves, cinnamon, and allspice, this cider is comfort in a mug.

What I love most about this recipe is how effortlessly it comes together. Once everything is in the slow cooker, all you have to do is wait for the magic to happen. A few hours later, youโ€™re rewarded with a deep, aromatic cider that tastes like a warm hug.

When the days grow shorter and the crisp winter air nips at the windows, thereโ€™s nothing quite like wrapping your hands around a steaming mug of homemade spiced apple cider. This recipe is more than just a drink itโ€™s a seasonal ritual. As the apples simmer away with cinnamon, cloves, and allspice, your whole home transforms into a sanctuary of warmth and nostalgia. Itโ€™s the kind of aroma that instantly softens the harsh edges of winter.

Using a blend of sweet Red Delicious and tart Granny Smith apples, this cider captures a beautiful balance that feels both bright and comforting. The addition of fresh orange slices adds a citrusy sparkle, cutting through the winter heaviness with just the right amount of natural sweetness. Slow-cooking everything for hours lets the flavors meld into a rich, fragrant brew that feels like winter warmth in liquid form.

This cider isnโ€™t just delicious itโ€™s grounding. Spiced drinks have been enjoyed for centuries during colder months, not only for flavor but also for the natural benefits of warming spices. Cinnamon and cloves offer a gentle heat that helps the body feel warmer from the inside out perfect when the temperature drops. Allspice adds a velvety roundness and is traditionally associated with festive baking, giving the cider that unmistakable โ€œholiday seasonโ€ personality. Together, these spices create a sense of comfort that feels like slipping into a soft blanket.

And when Christmas approaches, this recipe becomes even more special. Itโ€™s the kind of drink you can serve at holiday gatherings, tree-decorating nights, snowy afternoons, and Christmas Eve traditions. Set the slow cooker right on the counter and let guests ladle warm mugs for themselves during your holiday party. Your home will smell like a winter market sweet apples, glowing spices, and a hint of citrus joy.

Whether youโ€™re fighting the winter chill or creating a cozy Christmas atmosphere, this spiced cider brings warmth, comfort, and just a little bit of magic to the season.

Ingredients

  • 4 red delicious apples
  • 4 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 orange
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 7โ€“8 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 litres water

Instructions

1. Prep the fruit

Wash the apples and orange thoroughly. Cut them into slicesโ€”no need to peel or core the apples, as everything will be strained later. The orange peel gives beautiful citrus notes to the cider, so keep it on.

2. Build the base

Place the sliced apples and orange into your slow cooker. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and allspice. Give everything a gentle stir so the spices begin to mingle with the fruit.

3. Add water and slow-cook

Pour in 2 litres of water, making sure the fruit is mostly submerged. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 3 hours. During this time, the apples soften and the spices release their warm, cozy aroma.

4. Mash and simmer

After 3 hours, the apples will be tender enough to mash. Use a potato masher to break them down, releasing even more flavor into the cider. Turn the slow cooker to high and let everything cook for another 30 minutes.

5. Strain and serve

Turn off the heat. Carefully strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth, pressing gently to extract all that delicious liquid. Discard the solids. Serve the cider warm, ideally in a mug you can wrap your hands around.

Storage Tips

Let the cider cool, then store it in the refrigerator. It will keep for several days. When youโ€™re ready to enjoy it again, warm it gently on the stove or in the microwaveโ€”just until itโ€™s cozy, not boiling.

Serving Ideas

  • Add a cinnamon stick for garnish
  • Splash in a little maple syrup if you like it sweeter
  • For adults, a touch of bourbon or rum turns this into a festive holiday cocktail
  • Pair it with gingerbread cookies, pumpkin bread, or a simple slice of pie.

Notes

โ€ข Apple Variety Matters
Using both Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples creates a balanced flavorโ€”sweet, tart, and vibrant. If you want a deeper apple flavor, you can also mix in varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji.
โ€ข Donโ€™t Peel or Core the Apples
Leaving the peels and cores on adds extra flavor and natural pectin, which helps give the cider body. Everything gets strained out at the end, so no need for extra prep work.
โ€ข Adjusting Sweetness
This cider is naturally sweet from the apples and orange. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add a splash of maple syrup, brown sugar, or honey at the endโ€”little by littleโ€”until it hits the perfect sweetness.
โ€ข Spice Strength Is Flexible
If you love bold holiday spices, add an extra cinnamon stick or a few more cloves. If you prefer a milder cider, reduce the cloves to 4โ€“5. Whole spices are best because they slowly infuse without overpowering.
โ€ข Mash Gently
When mashing the softened fruit at the 3-hour mark, press gentlyโ€”just enough to release juices. Over-mashing can make the cider cloudy or pulpy, although it will still taste great.
โ€ข Straining Options
For a clearer cider, strain twice: once through a colander to remove large bits, then again through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth. For a rustic look and heartier texture, strain only once.
โ€ข Serving Ideas
Serve warm with a cinnamon stick, a slice of orange, or a clove-studded apple wedge. It pairs beautifully with winter desserts like gingerbread, shortbread, or spice cake.
โ€ข Keep It Warm for Gatherings
Hosting a Christmas or holiday party? Leave the cider in the slow cooker on the โ€œwarmโ€ setting. Guests can serve themselves all evening, and your home will continue to smell amazing.
โ€ข Storage Tips
Store the cooled cider in the fridge for up to 5โ€“6 days. Reheat gentlyโ€”avoid boiling to preserve the bright fruit flavor.
โ€ข Freezing
You can freeze cider! Cool it completely, then freeze in airtight containers for up to 3 months. Defrost in the fridge overnight and warm before serving.
โ€ข Make It Adult-Friendly
If desired, spike individual servings with bourbon, rum, spiced rum, or brandy right before drinking. Donโ€™t add alcohol directly to the slow cooker.
