Dal dhokli is a popular Gujarati style dal dunked with thick dough noodles and is considered to be a comforting food.
What is Dal Dhokli?
Dhokli is a diamond or square shape thick wheat flour noodles cooked in spicy and delicious Toor dal. The spices, onions, tomato, ginger, along with jaggery, tamarind, and fresh coriander everything when combines it’s just bursting with amazing flavors.
There are many versions in Gujarati, Marathi and Rajasthani cuisnie and it is often considered as comfort food.
When I first tried the dish, I literally fell in love with it. It is more or less like Indian style pasta and lentil soup. Serve it on a cold night and enjoy the comforting one-pot meal.
Ingredients needed to make Dal Dhokli
- Toor Dal-Toor or arhar /pigeon pea dal is used to make dal dhokli.
- Wheat flour-To cook the thick dough noodles.
- Besan-Adds a nice texture to the dhokli.

How to make Dal Dhokli?
To make dal dhokli, the first thing is to pressure cook the dal and get it ready. Once the dal is ready make the tempering of onions, tomato and spices and add it into the cooked dal.
Meanwhile, knead the dough and divide it into two round balls. Roll them into a slightly thick chapati shape and cut into diamond or square shapes.
Now add the dhoki into the boiling dal one by one and cook covered for about 15 minutes. Garnish the dal dhokli with coriander leaves and enjoy.
