For the second day of Maha marathon I decided to make Batata Vada for Alphabet “B”under “Street Food” theme. It’s a very popular vegetarian street food of Maharashtra, India. The name “Batata” means potato in English. It literally means potato fritters , made of a mashed potato patty coated with gram flour, deep-fried and served hot with chutney. The most common way to eat it is in the Vada pav.Batata vada was in my to do list since long time but never got a chance to make some. Can You believe that I haven’t tried them before but the results were pretty good in first attempt. We did enjoyed them and feeling like walking on the Juhu Beach . So let’s start the recipe . Yum
Recipe Sourec: Here
Ingredients:
4 potatoes,boiled and mashed
2 green chillies,chopped
2 curry leaves(optional)
1 teaspoon ginger , grated
1/2 pinch asefetida
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
Salt to taste1/4 cup coriander leaves , chopped
For batter
1 cup gram flour/besan
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 tablespoon rice flour
1/4 teaspoon red chilly powder
3/4 cup water
Vegetable oil for frying
Method:
Take mashed potatoes in a bowl
Heat oil in a pan , add asefetida , cumin and mustard seeds. Saute for 1 minute
Add ginger , curry leaves and green chilies.
Pour this tempering over the mashed potatoes. Mix well
Make six balls from it , press between palms and give a patty like shape. Keep covered and aside
Take ingredients for batter in a bowl . Slowly add water and mix carefully to avoid lumps. Batter should be thick enough .
Heat oil in a wok . Dip each potato patty in batter and fry in oil till golden and crispy from both sides.
Drain on paper towel and serve hot with chutney.
Enjoy!!
Serve-4. Cooking time -30 minutes
Note: You may enjoy these vadas with pav also.
