Garlic Naan

Easy and tasty garlic naan recipe on stove top, learn how to make garlic naan without a tandoor.

What is Garlic Naan?

Garlic naan is a variation of Naan bread which is a leavened refined wheat flour flatbread, usually made in the tandoor or oven. They are typically served with curry dishes and always brushed with butter or clarified butter /ghee. Normally, the dough is made up of all-purpose flour, yeast, sugar, and salt and is allowed to rise for some time.

In this recipe, I have made this naan on the stovetop without using a tandoor. They are the softest naan bread you would make ever.

Why make Garlic Naan?

✔Super soft and chewy

✔Easy to make

✔Needs few ingredients only

✔Pairs well with any curry

✔Freezer Friendly

✔Definitely a keeper recipe

Ingredients for Garlic Naan

  • All-purpose flour: Maida/all-purpose flour makes the best naan but you can use plain flour as well.
  • Yeast: To leaven the bread dough.
  • Yogurt: Adds richness in the naan bread.
  • Salt and Sugar: For flavors
  • Garlic: Fresh chopped garlic for that intense flavors.
  • Butter: To smear the naan bread.
  • Coriander leaves: Adds nice refreshing flavors.
  • Nigella seeds: They give nice flavors and adds texture in naan.

Can we make them Vegan?

I have used yogurt to add richness and it also helps make the naan airy, fluffy, and soft. To make the naan vegan, you can omit the yogurt.

Alternatively you can use plant based yogurt and milk to make them vegan.

How to make Garlic Naan?

Step 1. Make Dough– First of all, in a mixing bowl add all the ingredients. Now knead a smooth dough using a little lukewarm water at a time. Keep kneading as we want to work on the gluten in the flour.

Step 2. Roll Naan– When the dough is ready, keep it aside for 2 hours, covered with a towel to poof. Once the dough is doubled in size, pinch it down. Divide the dough into 7-8 balls. Roll one ball of dough, apply some coriander leaves, nigella seeds, and garlic on it and then roll them again to shape naan bread.

Step 3. Cook Naan– Now apply some water on one side of rolled naan and place it on a preheated griddle with the waterside on the bottom. Cook them on a griddle or tawa flip, cook the other side on direct flame and smear with butter.
