Tofu Tikka Masala

A spicy, juicy and tasty tofu tikka masala which taste heavenly with some freshly made garlic naans.

As this week of protein-rich dishes, I am doing Lunch or Dinner recipes this tofu tikka masala is my second post for the week. I don’t normally make it often as it is kind of like a festive dish or you can say a little time-consuming. But let me tell you all the time and effort you put into the dish are all worth it when you get to taste it with some hot garlic naan.

So this Tofu tikka masala was made two months back, I think it was something we were celebrating, I don’t remember exactly but we did have a wonderful feast. I made the naan on the stove top but as here we don’t have the open flame cookers, they did not turn out as good as they should be. Anyways if you happen to like tofu here are few Tofu Recipes to try.

Starting this Monday, my days have been more hectic as little one started preschool. She was supposed to start from January but instead, she is going from yesterday. I have to wake up an hour earlier than before, drop my elder one and her to school. And as soon I am back home, do some breakfast, cleaning it is time to pick lo and an hour later again it is time to pick the elder one. Of course, after that, it is time to cook dinner, Phew!! , it’s only two days have passed and I am so tired. I am not getting time to sit with the laptop. I guess it is going to take me some time to adjust this new lifestyle.

For Gravy
  • 2 onions,
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 2" ginger piece
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 2 green chilli
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon dried methi leaves
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • salt to taste
  • 4 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup coriander leaves
For tofu tikka
  1. In a mixing bowl add hung curd, garlic, ginger, lemon juice and all the spices powders and salt. Give a nice stir and set aside.

  2. Using paper towels absorb the extra water in tofu and cut into cubes or triangle shape.

  3. Add the tofu, onion and bell pepper cubes into the curd mixture and gently stir to combine.

  4. Let it marinate for about 2 to 4 hours in the refrigerator. Once done arrange the tofu and veggies onto bamboo skewers.

  5. Heat a grill pan and drizzle some olive oil. Grill the skewers until slightly golden. Set them aside.

For masala gravy
  1. In a blender make a puree of onions, garlic, and ginger and likewise make another puree of tomatoes and green chilli.

  2. Heat olive oil in a pan and add onion puree, saute for about 10 to 12minutes or until golden in color.

  3. Stir in all the spice powders and salt along with tomato puree.Cook until oil comes out from edges of the pan, stirring in between.

  4. Add 2 cups of water and cook until desired consistency. Once cooked drop in the tofu skewers into the curry.

  5. Stir and add chopped coriander leaves.

  6. Serve with naan.

Recipe Notes

Alternatively, you can grill the tofu skewers in the tandoor, or in the oven at grill mode.

The same way you can use paneer instead of tofu.

Adjust the spices and salt as per your taste buds.

  4. Rajani says:

The half days are the worst where in you spend more time in dropping and picking up than getting anything done at home. Moms start breathing normally only after the kids go to school full time.

Coming to the naan, it looks perfectly done on the pictures and even though the gravy is a little time consuming, it’s well worth the effort. Superb pictures too!

  5. Vaishali says:

Sapna don’t you have some school transport , it is so much easier and the kids are happy too .

    1. Vaishali, the concept of school transport is not here in Ireland and that’s what makes it more difficult. Anyways thanks, dear.

  6. It takes some time to adjust to the new lifestyle but you will get the hang of it soon. The whole spread with those naan looks so tempting. I have tried paneer tikka masala and I am sure I would love this tofu version too..

  12. Sapana it will take time to adjust to a new routine. I hate preparing any flatbread on the stove top when I’m in Montreal. The tofu tikka masala looks scrumptious. I love tofu.
