Instructions
Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease a 9″ square cake tin and dust it with flour.
In a bowl whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt.
In another bowl add boiling water, butter, brown sugar, buttermilk, and molasses. Mix till butter melts.
Now mix the wet ingredients with dry and whisk until well combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35 minutes or until done.
Cool the cake completely before slicing.
Notes
Make sure to use fresh baking soda to make these cakes. Sometimes, if soda is old it won’t make the best cake.
For best results do not overmix the cake batter.
If you do not have molasses or black treacle, you can use honey and brown sugar paste instead.
Store the leftover cake in the refrigerator in airtight containers.
