For the second day of cooking from Pavani’s blog under Special Theme , I have selected this Tomato Rasam which happens to be a secret recipe from her restauranteur friend . I have tasted rasam so many times in Sarvana Bhavan , from my Malayan friends and other South Indian Restaurants but never ever tried it at home . Did I mention never ?? Yes that’s true but how could it be possible not to try such an addictive preparation at home . I must be crazy and thought of South Indian recipes to be tricky and difficult . But after trying this rasam , I understood that SI recipes are not only easy to prepare but unbelievably tasty also. I also made the rasam powder at home and will be posting the recipe very soon.
Rasam is considered to be a South Indian soup , prepared with tamarind , Chilli , pepper , tomato and steamed lentil along with Rasam Powder. It is not only delicious but has enormous health benefits as well . Rasam aids in digestion and lowering cholesterol and also contains lots of Vitamin A and Vitamin C.So let’s start the recipe . Yum
Ingredients:
3 Tomatoes , medium sized
1 tablespoon Tamarind pulp
2 teaspoon Rasam powder
1 teaspoon Coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon Red chili powder
Salt to taste
For tempering:
1 tablespoon clarified butter
1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
2 Garlic cloves , chopped
4-5 Curry leaves
Few Coriander leaves , chopped
Method:
Boil 1 1/2 cups of water , make small cuts in the tomatoes and blanch for 4-5 minutes. Remove the tomatoes from water, peel the skin and puree it in a blender.
Add the tomato puree and tamarind pulp in to the same water that is used for boiling tomatoes and bring to boil , then cook it on low flame .
Add coriander powder , red chilly powder , rasam powder and salt.Bring it to boil .
Heat clarified butter in a pan add mustard seeds, garlic and curry leaves. Add this to rasam , mix well .
Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot with Rice and Papad.
Enjoy!!
